New Balance has unveiled its latest lifestyle shoe, the Abzorb 1890, a 2000s-inspired design that combines retro elements with modern technology. After a successful collaboration with Action Bronson, the Abzorb 1890 is now ready for its wider launch, offering a unique blend of style and performance.
The Abzorb 1890 draws inspiration from the 2013 890v3 running shoe, featuring a synthetic wave cutout pattern with reflective welded 'tear drop' accents. But the most intriguing element is the cushioning, which repurposes the midsole of the 2010 2002 running shoe, a design that has been scaled down in the 2002R form. This marks the first time the original 2002 cushioning has been used since the '10 iteration, creating a unique blend of old and new.
James Lee, lead footwear designer at New Balance, explains the design process: 'For projects that reference archival models, a lot of the design process is focused on refining and improving existing elements without losing what made them special in the first place. The goal is always to strike the right balance—creating something that feels modern and compelling while still staying authentic.'
The Abzorb 1890's formal unveiling was captured by photographer Nikolai Ahn in Seoul, showcasing the shoe's duality between the city's playful streets and its restorative natural landscapes. This campaign shot sets the tone for the shoe's unique blend of style and function.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Abzorb 1890 has also been the canvas for the upcoming 1890A moccasin hybrid, which was on display at Paris Fashion Week. This unexpected collaboration raises questions about the boundaries of sneaker design and the role of high-tech cushioning in lifestyle footwear.
