Chris Hemsworth REVEALS Thor's New Role in Avengers: Doomsday! 'One of The Elders'? (2026)

Chris Hemsworth Unveils Exciting New Aspects of Thor in Avengers: Doomsday

In a compelling revelation, Chris Hemsworth has shared intriguing insights into the transformation of Thor, the God of Thunder, in the highly anticipated film, Avengers: Doomsday. He describes Thor's character at this stage of his life—over 2,000 years old—as significantly more complex and evolved than viewers have seen before.

Since first stepping into the role in 2011’s Thor, Hemsworth, who was relatively unknown at the time, has become synonymous with the character, establishing himself as one of the standout figures within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This journey has been marked by a series of highs and lows; while films like Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame have showcased Thor’s heroism brilliantly, others, including Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Thor: Love and Thunder, didn’t resonate as strongly with audiences.

In a recent conversation with BroBible, while promoting his new film Crime 101, Hemsworth reflected on his journey portraying Thor—the successes and challenges—and how these experiences have prepared him for Avengers: Doomsday, set to release this December.

"Thor’s role has evolved with each film I’ve done. Looking back at the first movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, it served as an incredible foundation for me," Hemsworth recalled. "Working with such a talented director who valued collaboration was truly brilliant."

However, Hemsworth also noted that different directors have had varying interpretations of Thor. He mentioned how some had a clear vision for the character, while others struggled with his portrayal. Notably, he recalled Joss Whedon’s candid acknowledgment of the difficulties in capturing Thor, particularly after he acquires immense power. It was during his collaboration with Taika Waititi that Hemsworth felt a significant shift, stating, "I was growing tired of my previous portrayal, and Taika felt the same way. We decided to explore new dimensions of the character together."

Hemsworth expressed his hope that their partnership would infuse Thor’s character with an element of unpredictability. He articulated how the past fifteen years of embodying the character have influenced his portrayal, especially in Avengers: Doomsday. "In the latest films, I began to feel Thor’s rightful place among the ensemble. Initially, I felt like the newcomer, but now, surrounded by newer characters, I realized I have more agency and a greater voice within the group."

He continued, "Accepting this evolution means I can portray Thor as one of the elders in the MCU. Given that he’s over 2,000 years old, we aimed to emphasize this aspect more than before. At this stage in his life, there’s a sense of weariness and exhaustion, which we leaned into while developing the character."

The teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday presents an emotionally charged and cautious version of Thor, preparing for impending conflict. It’s evident that the Russo Brothers, who are directing the film, are taking a more serious approach to Thor following the lighter tone of Thor: Love and Thunder. Hemsworth likely played a role in this shift, having previously expressed concerns that Thor became overly comedic in his last outing.

The Russo Brothers helm both Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, based on a script by Stephen McFeely, with whom they have collaborated on previous projects like the Avengers and Captain America films. Additionally, Michael Waldron, known for his work on Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is also contributing to the screenplay.

Mark your calendars! Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, while Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to follow closely on December 17, 2027.
