Amazon, a key player in this race, has announced its intention to invest heavily in AI, along with other cutting-edge technologies. CEO Andy Jassy believes AI will revolutionize customer experiences, and he's putting his money where his mouth is. But here's where it gets controversial: while Jassy sees AI as an "unusual opportunity," Amazon is simultaneously cutting costs and laying off thousands of employees.
And Amazon isn't alone. Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plans to spend up to $135 billion this year on AI projects and infrastructure. Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, expects his firm to outspend Meta, with a planned capital expenditure of $185 billion. Meanwhile, Microsoft, though not disclosing exact figures, has already spent over $72 billion on AI-related talent and infrastructure.
But here's the part most people miss: despite these massive investments, shares of these tech giants have been tumbling. Investors seem to be questioning the wisdom of such aggressive spending, especially as AI-related projects become increasingly costly.
